There are many different reasons why a visual impairment or vision impairment can emerge.

One of the more common causes of a vision impairment among children is Cortical visual impairment (CVI), which is a visual impairment caused by the brain – making it difficult for the child to interpret what he or she sees. Other common cause of visual impairment among children are Optic atrophy and Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH), which are injuries or a lack of development on the optic nerve.

More than 50% of children born with visual impairment also have a combination of other physical, mental or cognitive challenges or disabilities.

Just like for everyone, it is important to take care of and see the individual needs of every child.  Everyone should be given the same opportunities to attend school, participate in leisure activities and become prepared for living their lives as independently as possible.
